Unfortunately this is a fairly common problem in tucson. Ponding is a result of a poor design or roof installation. The most difficult of all flat roof problems is ponding. However in my own experience the problems with leaking flat roofs are usually as a result of either poor workmanship installing the roof membrane poor maintenance by the building owner or as a result of age.

If you have attic access the easiest way to track down a leak is to go up there with a flashlight and look for the evidence. Flat roofs aren t actually flat. They can be several feet above the leak or to the right or left of it. First of all we should clear up a common misconception.

During the design of a dead level roof slope should be added with tapered insulation or crickets. The drain is supposed to be lower than the rest of the roof not an inch higher. Leaks and moisture probably the most common problems with flat roofs leaks and lingering moisture are issues that can be dealt with effectively as long as you stay on top of them. Penetrations can include plumbing and roof vents chimneys dormers or anything else that projects through the roof.

Another common problem across all roof types is what i call incidental ponding water if we move the water off the roof the roof has a really good chance of performing the way it should notes pierce. Flat roofs are known as being problematic with many suffering leaks.
