You look down and the rug says welcome home after the weaving is complete the only thing left is finishing.
Finishing a woven rag rug.
Finishing a rag rug i like to finish my rugs at the curve of the rug.
In this video i show you how to add a strip of material and how to finish a row and start a new one.
Lay those on top of the rug.
If you are using a sewing machine be sure to use a loose large zigzag stitch.
It is quicker than tying knots and is a handy finish to have in your hip pocket.
I review in more detail the twining process.
Make sure to pay attention to the width of your rug as you go and keep it as even as you can.
Weave a rag rug.
For rags rugs that means securing the warp ends and finishing the ends with fringe or stitched hems.
Tie them in knots on the ends or sew the ends together to string them all together like a giant ball of yarn.
Tie one end of your fabric strips to the upper left hand nail in your loom.
Wrap it clockwise around the lower.
This rug is woven on an open sett to accommodate the bulky yarn.
Repeat the weaving process until you are about 2 from the cardboard slots on the other end of the rug.
Leave a 3 inch tail.
Attach your fabric strips together.
Begin to wrap the rug into a spiral sewing the two edges together.
As shown in the picture go under over under over under tuck tuck again under two more blues horizontally snip off the excess.
As you finish each row straighten out the weaved strip with your fingers and slide it as close to the row before it as you can.
It hides the ending really well.
This makes the ends spread pretty far apart even for rug.
Bring the fabric strip down to the lower left nail.
When you are transitioning from the straight part of the rug to the curve cut off your strips to be about 4 inches long.
I was taught to finish a wool rug in this manner.
Get more towels enough to cover the rug wet them and hand wring dry.
You come in from the world with your feet dusty and weary.
Sew the rug into a spiral.
Once the rug is the width you want it across the middle it s time to work yourself back down to 8 strips then 6 4 2 and finally none in a way that doesn t throw off your overall shape.
